Monmouth first team played their second match of the season against Risca B on Monday 15th September. Last season, Monmouth have previously won, drew and lost matches against Risca so the game was anybody's. The first quarter began with high intensity, with both teams converting goals off every centre. Risca's strong attacking unit were well drilled and quick to feed into the shooters. The Monmouth defence, Mandy Davies and Becky Hoggins, fought strongly to turn over any rebounded shots and took some great interceptions, keeping Monmouth in the game. The interceptions were passed fluently down the court, pulling off some impressive sequences of play, followed up with top quality shooting from the Monmouth shooters Holly Hall and Lisa Small. The first quarter ended evenly with Monmouth only trailing by two goals. Risca continued to play with strong form, making very few mistakes throughout the second and third quarters. The Monmouth attacking unit of Kali-Jade Cross and Emma King worked hard to create space to feed the Monmouth shooters with accuracy. The Risca defence made it increasingly difficult for this to continue and any unforced errors made by Monmouth were quickly turned over and converted by Risca. Pressure from the Monmouth defensive trio, Vanessa Ball, Laura Griffiths and Becky Hoggins, was not enough to rattle the Risca shooters who had managed to keep their strong form throughout the remainder of the match. This allowed Risca to run away with the scoreline into the third quarter. Monmouth went into the final quarter of the game fighting hard to secure the point for reaching half of Risca's score. Luckily, they managed this with a final score of 46-29.
