Monmouth Ladies' first team played their last fixture of the season in their campaign to stay in the SE Wales Premier Division. They faced bottom-of-the-league Abergavenny, who were in desperate need of a win to end their season on a high, and with a tight bottom half of the table, no team could afford to be complacent. The first quarter began with high intensity, with both teams converting goals off every centre. Monmouth quickly took the lead following quick turn overs by their defence, Mandy Davies and Vanessa Ball. Shooters Lisa Small and Nina Booker converted the goals they needed to, which took Monmouth into a four-goal lead at the end of the first quarter. Monmouth kept the pressure on throughout the second and third quarters. Excellent pressure on the Abergavenny centre pass from Laura Griffiths and Emma King lured Abergavenny into making unforced errors, allowing them to link with Kali-Jade Cross and feed the ball fluently to the Monmouth shooters. Monmouth managed to extend their lead even further by the end of the third quarter to 37 – 31. Monmouth went in to the final quarter of the game with a well-deserved lead, all they had to do now was to score off every centre pass and keep possession of the ball. The Monmouth defence continued to stay strong and make it difficult for the Abergavenny shooters to find space in the circle, the pressure on their attack allowed Mandy Davies to turn over many impressive interceptions, which Monmouth were then able to convert and the score was 47-35 with Monmouth taking an impressive win in their last game of the season. The player of the match for Monmouth, voted by Abergavenny, was Mandy Davies and the player's player for Monmouth was also Mandy Davies. Monmouth finished the league in 8th place out of 12 positions, surviving relegation for their first season in the Premier Division. Captain Emma King was very pleased with her side's performance, she has been impressed with the team work between them all when it mattered and is looking forward to another season in the Premier. Club chairman Sally Price is delighted that the squad is promoting the netball club in the highest division in SE Wales and would like to congratulate King and Davies for making the SE Wales County Team this season.
