East Gwent Senior League

MATHERN FC clinched a double championship title on Saturday as both the Reserves sides made club history.

The league agreed to allow the B team’s match at Thornwell B to kick-off 30 minutes earlier knowing that if the visitors took three points they would finish above Underwood SC B to add the title to the two cups they have won in recent weeks.

Two goals by Jimmy Burchill and a Richard Wood thunderbolt put Mathern 3-0 up at the break and two more from Burchill plus a Kyle Gettings hat-trick and Matt Bajjada’s second goal in two games, clinched a 9-0 victory.

After the match, the B team returned to Mathern where the A team were drawing 0-0 against a resilient and strong Severn Bridge determined to spoil the home side’s party!

Both teams had chances, none better than Dan Tyler’s first half one-on-one but he had the last word, converting a second-half penalty to calm the nerves and start the party.

The ceremony began with the presenting of the division 2 Golden Boot to Kyle Gettings who netted 26 goals in all competitions and was followed league fixture secretary Marcus Jenkins handing the Division Two trophy to injured skipper Sam Marmont and his stand-in Rob Wood.

After the customary spraying of sparkling white wine, league secretary Brian Reed presented the Division One trophy to the A team’s captain Wayne Duffield.
