MOST of the Saturday football programme was wiped out by rain-sodden pitches, including Gwent Premier top tier leaders Monmouth Town’s trip to Cefn Fforest.
Usk Town did get to play their Gwent Premier 2 home match against high-flying Brynmawr however, with the visitors taking advantage of Fairfield’s 3-0 loss to third-placed Pontnewydd United to leapfrog them to top spot with a 4-2 win.
Mawr dominated the opening half to lead 3-0 at the break through goals on nine, 38 and 45 minutes.
Louis Quinton gave the Green Army hope with a goal within a minute of the restart, only for the visitors to restore the three-goal advantage within seven minutes.
Quinton became provider to set up Rio Richardson to pull another back with 10 minutes left, but Mawr held firm to take the points.
Elsewhere, high-flying Redbrook Rovers and Forest hosts Mushet & Coalway both created first half opportunities, but neither side could break the deadlock.
Missed chances at both ends and strong defensive organisation meant it remained goalless at half-time in the North Gloucestershire One clash.
Redbrook started the second half with real purpose and control though, and the breakthrough came on 62 minutes through Dan Heaven, who finished confidently for 1-0.
The momentum stayed with the Reds, and on 78 minutes Tom Wareham doubled the advantage, capping an excellent spell of pressure.
Mushet responded late on by pulling a goal back, but Redbrook stood firm, with composure, discipline, and intelligent game management ensuring they saw it out for a crucial 2–1 victory, which closes the gap on leaders Staunton & Corse to just two points, with a six-point gap to Lydbrook 2nds in third.
Redbrook 2nds missed out 3-2 at home to Longhope 2nds in NG3, who were ultimately undone by quality rather than effort.
Rovers started brightly and controlled the opening 25 minutes, with crisp passing and intelligent movement causing the Foresters problems.
And the breakthrough was worthy of the dominance, Jack Clements unleashing a stunning 25-yard strike to put the hosts ahead.
But the goal sparked Longhope into life, and they bundled home an equaliser following a scramble in the box.
Redbrook responded when excellent work down the flank created space, and Cai Dorrington finished clinically from Sam Hamley’s pinpoint cut-back to restore the lead.
The hosts created several more opportunities before the break and could have gone in with a bigger advantage than 2-1.
And the second half saw Longhope – fielding several players who regularly compete three divisions higher – begin to assert themselves.
Redbrook were unfortunate to be denied what looked a clear penalty, but Longhope again scrambled home an equaliser.
And with the game finely poised, it was the visitors’ higher-level quality that proved decisive, with a late strike bouncing through a crowded box to nestle in the net for the winner.
But Tintern Abbey secured a hard-won point in a 1-1 draw away to East Gwent 2 high-flyers Chepstow 3rds, David Perrett’s 75th -minute goal cancelling out Charlie Key’s 17th-minute opener.
