SUDBROOK CC’s Firsts came out on top in a thrilling run-chase that saw them reach their target with the loss of only one wicket!Set a large target of 316 by Abergavenny, Sudbrook captain Ross Lewis (100) pictured below, fellow opener Micky Martin (103 not out) pictured below right, and Lewis Morgan (106 not out) saw the Mill Lane side reach 319 with 11 balls to spare.

Skipper Lewis thinks the three centuries in one innings might be a unique event, if only for his club.

“I can’t ever remember us successfully chasing over 300 before, let alone having three players from the same team scoring hundreds in the same innings,” he said.

“We gathered momentum and after I departed, Micky and Lewis carried their bats to take us home.

“Hopefully this will be the start of a nice run-in to the end of the season and we can give some of our more inexperienced players the chance of playing first team cricket.”

Lewis had rewarded two players from the club’s Seconds – Bradley Bates and team captain Jamie Watkins – for some excellent performances in recent matches and Watkins grabbed the opportunity by claiming the fifth Abergavenny wicket finishing with 1-54 and one maiden in his nine overs.

The visitors played their part in an exciting match played in hot, sunny conditions.

“Hats off to Abergavenny’s batsmen who took advantage of an excellent wicket with most of our bowlers finding it difficult to contain them,” admitted Lewis.

Openers Gavin Heritage (18) and Geraint Leach (39) gave Abergavenny a good start before losing their wickets to Jonathan Lewis and Lewis Morgan (1-64) respectively, but Tamoor Zafar top-scored with an excellent 141 – losing partner William Glenn (31) and Andy Clarke (41) along the way.

Glenn was caught behind by Ross Lewis, off the bowling of Martin Norton (1-48) and Clarke went the same way, off Watkins.

Norton then held a catch to end Zafar’s fine innings to give Jonathan Lewis (2-58) his second victim, with the visitors’ score on 298.

Alex Astley Jones (11) and Dan Cooke (10) took the score over the 300-runs mark before being run out by Scott O’Leary and Joe Voke respectively, leaving Dinesh Rex (6 not out) and Scott Greaves (1 not out) to see Abergavenny to their final total.
