CHEPSTOW CC wrapped up the Division 1 title with one match to play after beating Abergavenny last Saturday (29th August).
They are due to play their final match on Saturday, when they visit local rivals Sudbrook.
That game may have taken on less significance but the Firsts’ captain, Jason Dobbie, will not be taking it easy and expects to name a full-strength side.
“Our victory today was an excellent result to top off a fantastic season,” Dobbie said.
“Jake Kings’ century proved too many for Abergavenny and we will be looking to keep our good form going on Saturday
“As a club, we will sit down and discuss all of our options for next year before any decisions are made.”
Jake Kings and Dave Teague were the main destroyers at Abergavenny, with Kings hammering 16 boundaries and one maximum in making 101 from 83 deliveries in the 282 total and Teague’s 10-over spell ripped the heart out of the home side’s chase, taking four wickets for 25 runs with two maidens.
Chepstow’s success has been underpinned by the form of Carwyn James, which helped give them a great start.
But James’ fellow opener Gareth Ansell has also enjoyed a great season both with the bat and behind the stumps while all Chepstow’s bowlers have contributed to some excellent performances.
Abergavenny captain Geraint Leach won the toss and asked Chepstow to bat first,
Although they lost Ansell and James with just 50 on the board, Kings stood firm and took the score onto 169, losing Teague (19 lbw) before being caught by Andrew Jones off Leach’s bowling.
After losing Dave Monk (20) and their captain Jason Dobbie, Chepstow rallied as Malith Madurasinghe weighed in with 32 and Alyn Franklin added 20.
Abergavenny’s best bowling figures were posted by Tom Griffiths (2-18 from four overs) and Kyle Holmes took 2-28 from just three overs but by then, the visitors were well in command.
In reply, the home side lost opener Andrew Jones (10) off Dobbie’s bowling and Gavin Heritage, bowled by Tudor Morgan-Huggett for 42.
Tamoor Zatar made 30 runs before being becoming Teague’s first victim, lbw.
With the next three batsmen falling victim to two Ansell stumpings and one Dobbie catch, Teague effectively removed the middle order for just nine runs.
Abergavenny struggled to 187-9 thanks to Leach (20), Scott Greaves (28) and Matt Knight (12) but the day belonged to Chepstow.
