We were pleased to see an article in the Beacon showing support to the building of a fit for purpose Community Hub in Raglan.
The current facility is, and has been for a long time, sorely in need of updating so that it can meet the needs of its customers. The key point here is that the Community Hub needs to be fit for purpose for all community users.
The site of the old Raglan junior school had been provided by Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) to Raglan for such a hub. It was very disappointing to discover that MCC had withdrawn the use of the old junior school site for community use without any local engagement. We eventually discovered, after protest, that the site was instead being considered for a Welsh school, attracting £2.1m in funding to MCC. After walking the breadth of the village we can see that this is currently the only remaining site central to the village that has room for the capacity required of a community hub that Raglan needs.
MCC are due to consider the building of the Welsh school (a refurbishment of the current building) on this land in early December and we urge MCC and Raglan village to consider that once this land is lost for sole community use it will be lost forever. The Raglan Village Hall Association (RVHA) are passionate about providing a fit-for-purpose facility for its community and will continue to lobby the Community Council and County Council for their support.
