MADAM, There is now no doubt that there was a Stone Age crannog type of settlement built in Monmouth's post-glacial lake and this enhances the picture we have of life in prehistoric Monmouth. Settlements around the huge lake range from the hunter-gatherer's camp site (Middle Stone Age) in St James' Street and Bronze and Iron Age activities in upper Monnow Street, through to the New Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements at Parc Glyndwr on the new Rockfield Estate. This latest discovery must rank alongside the evidence at Parc Glyndwr for Bronze Age boat building – an interpretation which has aroused international interest as no other prehistoric boat building site has been recognised in Western Europe. Monmouth is fortunate in having a small but very experienced team of both amateur and professional archaeologists who were inspired in the 1950s by Mr A L Sockett and the late Keith Kissack.
