A FINAL-YEAR student from Monmouth studying medicine at Cardiff University will be going to India on 27th February with The Hope Foundation charity to provide health care to children and families from the slums of Kolkata.
Tabby Prest will be in Kolkata for eight weeks, where The Hope Foundation have built a hospital, homes and shelters. She will work mainly with children from the slums, but will also provide care for their families, as well as working in shelters for orphans and victims of domestic violence.
Tabby said: “I’m looking forward to going somewhere I can make a difference, and the chance to experience another health care system.
“Though the medicine there won’t be wholly relevant to my work back here for the NHS, such poverty brings an extreme range of problems which aren’t seen in first world countries.
“Aside from that I love working with children, as my favourite placement so far has been a paediatric placement.
“It will be great to have some more hands-on practise, though I also know I’ll end up wanting to bring them all home!”
Tabby is fundraising for The Hope Foundation ahead of her trip.
