RESIDENTS and visitors of Chepstow are mourning the loss of a familiar face in town.
Sonny the First Class Café dog joined thousands for their breakfasts and meals over his nine years as mascot, but passed away on Tuesday 28th June.
The popular terrier had his own Facebook page, which has been flooded with messages of grief and condolence for his owner, Nicky Mogridge.
News of his death was met with nearly 150 comments from as far away as Australia, Finland and Italy.
16-year-old Sonny was rescued from Newport city pound by Nicky when he was nine months old. She said: “He was a little champ.
“It’s still very raw that he is gone. He came to work with me every day, to the pub, for walks; everywhere we went, he came with us.
“I feel lost without him.”
Fans of the little black and white dog came to see him whether or not they were visiting the train station café. He even had friends in high places, pictured over the years in police cars and fire engines.
Sonny enjoyed his spot outside the café, refusing to move from saying hello to customers and passers by on their way to the train station. He could always be spotted on his bean bag, complete with pillow and cosy blanket.
Nicky added: “In the winters we tried to get him to come into the dining room, but he wanted to be outside meeting and greeting everyone.
“He may have been a good age but he wasn’t like an old dog.
“People have been amazing and so supportive, I’ve been given flowers, cards and chocolates.
“Some of my customers have been in tears and one person even had time off work after the sad news.”
Sonny died of pancreatitis and the beginnings of kidney failure.
Fans said on Facebook: “Sonny you will be missed by all of us who ever met you. We are so sorry we have come back from hols to this news, but we know that your mum always does the best for you. You leave so many happy memories. Lots of love xxxxx,” wrote Ruth Sharville.
Mandy Howells added: “Dear Sonny you will be greatly missed by all your fans and especially by your mum. You brightened everyone’s day.”
A fundraising race night will be held in memory of Sonny on 7th August at the Greenman Backpackers in Chepstow in aid of the Lost Souls sanctuary, who Nicky and Sonny have supported for years.
It isn’t the first time the people of Chepstow have mourned the passing of a famous animal in the town. In 2013, hundred attended a wake for Alfie the cat, before a memorial plaque was erected on the side of Merrick Pharmacy, where it still stands.
