A REMEMBRANCE walk, organised by Monmouth Walkers are Welcome last November, traced the footsteps of soldiers from the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) as they marched from Castle House, through the town to Troy Station, on their way to war. Funding has now been provided for the creation of a lasting commemoration, in the form of a poppy trail.
Monmouth-based company, Platform One, is spearheading the creative side of the project and currently gathering information about the men who went off to serve their country in the First World War. As part of their research they are putting out an appeal. David Evans from the company said: "We know that there are families in Monmouth and the surrounding area who have lived here for generations and that stories of their relatives' involvement in the war may have been passed down.
"We would like to hear from them so that we can build a picture of those who served at home and abroad, and also discover what impact it had on their friends, families and community. Whilst the major focus of our project will be the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia), we are also keen to hear about those who served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Flying Corps/Royal Air Force. We're also interested to learn any stories of people associated with Troy Station and the railway."
If you have a relative who was involved and you would like to contact Platform One with information, anecdotes or memorabilia please ring 01600 714600 during normal office hours, Monday to Friday, or email: [email protected]">[email protected]
