MARTIN Rees of Les Croupiers running club in Cardiff achieved the over 60 best for age world record at Chepstow’s four mile road race on Tuesday 12th July.

In a dazzling time of 21 minutes and 24 seconds, Martin Rees not only smashed the Male Veteran 60 course record, but gained a best for age world record for this distance too.

152 runners lined up on the start line in Redwick, by the Rose Inn pub, to compete in the two lap, four mile course.

The fast, flat nature of the course attracts talented runners from clubs in England and Wales, who are looking to achieve personal best times.

The winning man on the night, David Bishop from Bristol and West ran the race in 19 minutes and 18 seconds and was only 11 seconds off the all-time course record.

The winning lady, Charlotte Green, also from Bristol and West achieved a very fast time of 22 minutes, and 27 seconds.

It was a cool, calm night so conditions for the runners were near perfect.

Age category winners were Phil Matthews, Matt Hurford, Paul Talbot, Andrew Blair, Steve Davies, Martin Rees, Howard Attwood, Brian Gough, Lisa Erikkson, Julie Cashell, Niki Morgan, Joanne Milliken, Jeanette Jenkins, Teresa Tranter and Brenda Avery.

Race director Sophie Gilbert said: “I was completely thrilled that Martin Rees achieved a world record at our event. The course is fast and flat so the race has always attracted very speedy runners.

“There were some impressively fast times recorded on the night, but to have a world record broken is really something else. Huge congratulations to Martin.”
