MATHERN Athletic Club will host an Over 60's International football match between Wales and England next month.

Veterans internationals are rare at this age group but organiser Jim Edwards said fitness levels and the football played are both high quality,

"The Welsh team is made up of players from the Welsh League but the England team can draw on a number of former pro players from all over the country," he said.

Wales Over 60's recently played a trial match against the Welsh League's Over 55 team held at Merthyr Tydfil's Penydarren Park, winning 2-1.

The match is due to take place on December 14th (kick-off 2pm) and admission is free.

Local interest will be sparked as it hoped that players from Mathern, Monmouth and Newport will be among those selected to pull on a Welsh shirt against the old enemy!
