A TRIO of Monmouth Tri Club members celebrated the end of the season in spectacular style, after months of arduous training.

Martin Adams, Sharon Neville and Katie Peters fought through wet and blustery conditions to conquer the iconic Ironman Wales, one of the nation’s most gruelling sporting challenges.

The demanding course saw nearly 3,000 athletes descend on Tenby to battle along a 140.6-mile course.

Participants were tasked with a 2.4 mile two-lap swim from North Beach, followed by a 112-mile bike ride on very hilly roads, and topped off by a marathon made up of four laps of the town.

Martin finished just after 10pm, in 14 hours 25 minutes 35 seconds, with club chairwoman Sharon not far behind in 14.39.52, and Katie Peters at 16.14.03.

Sharon came 7th out of 21 in her age 50 to 54 category, earning her a bronze medal in the same age group of the Welsh National Championships.

Around the corner from Tenby, Nick Wellsted tackled the Saundersfoot Sprint Triathlon, enjoying an ocean swim and very hilly bike course in 1.37.50.

Last weekend, the club also enjoyed an end of season warm down in the annual Cotswold Lake 62 End of Season Super Sprint Triathlon, held just outside Cirencester.

Showing up strongly with three mixed teams of four each, members raced against the clock with a 300m lake swim, followed by a 12km bike ride and 1.5m run.

Although short on distance, the pressure on speed provided plenty of challenge.

Team one, with Sharon Neville, Phil Bryant, Jon Marsh and Matt Lock came 21st out of 80 teams, with Renske Bouwens, Phil Tilley, Kelly Major, and Marina Wright in team two earning 38th, and team three, with Andrew Hillis, Julian Mason, Nick Wellsted and Andrew Washbrook coming home 52nd.
