ON Sunday 26th July a record number of competitors braved the cold and rain to compete in Monmouth’s Aquathlon challenge.

Run by the town’s triathlon club, the Aquathlon attracted 105 entrants for its second running.

The multi-discipline event saw runners and swimmers from throughout Wales converge on Monmouth School Sports Club, on the banks of the River Wye.

There were three different routes run: a 2km open water swim up and downstream, a 1km swim downstream, and a 12.4km cross-border run along the Wye riverbank footpath after either of the open water swims.

Richard Newhouse, Aquathlon race director said: “As a small but growing sports club, it was fantastic to have such enthusiastic participation in our event this year; from swimmers and runners, volunteers and all the friends and families who turned out to support the competitors in the rain.”
