Simon Tysoe and Cliffy Simmons produced their best result of the season with an excellent third overall, second in category two, and second in class on last weekend's Stephens & George Harry Flatters Rally. The event, the latest round of the Mintex British Historic Championship and Welsh Historic series, offered 13 tests over the daunting Epynt ranges. Tysoe renewed his championship battle with both David Stokes and Stanley Orr in category two. Over the first two loops of three stages, Tysoe was just eight seconds behind Stokes and ahead of Orr, but former champion Stokes gradually edged away after Tysoe had a 100 mph off and decided to settle for a safe second in category two and third overall. Two local crews continued their season-long Welsh Historic championship battle with Simon Pickering and Colin Jenkins in the Dave Jenkins Motorsport run pinto engined RS1600 just coming out on top despite a few spins on the morning loop. They settled down to finish 15th overall, fourth in class and second Welsh championship historic class C3 points. Just one place behind in 16th was Jason Gardner with Ade Williams alongside in the Brecon View Plumbing twin-cam Escort RS1600. The duo had a slight misfire on the opening loop of three tests, this got really bad on the second loop, seeing the crew drop nearly a minute to there rivals, this was found to be a dodgy plug lead at service. With the car now fully on song, Gardner set about trying to reel in Pickering and despite setting some good times they finished 19 seconds shy of their fellow local crew, but still took fifth in class and third in the Welsh series C3 class. One local crew not to see the finish were Eric Davis and Russ Joseph in the Dennis Motorsport Mini GT. Having held a comfortable class lead after stage six, the duo retired on the next loop, reason unknown. The Historic event was won by West Walian crew Tomos Davies and Mark Crisp in their Escort RS1800 and Damian Cole and Jack Morton took the Modern event in a Ford Focus WRC.
