THE River Wye will again provide the stunning backdrop for one of Wales’ top rowing events, as Monmouth Rowing Club gear up for their annual two-day regatta on Saturday-Sunday, May 24-25, reports ALEX MITCHELL.

Building on the success of last year’s event – which dates back to the early 1930s – this year's promises yet more exciting racing, community spirit and inclusivity.

Hundreds of boats will descend on the river for a packed schedule of racing over 1500m on Saturday, and 750m sprints on Sunday, offering fast-paced, competitive action.

A standout feature is the continuation of the adaptive programme, which debuted to widespread acclaim last year.

Adaptive events allow athletes with disabilities to compete, and have brought a new layer of inspiration and community connection to the regatta, with Monmouth RC proud to lead by example in promoting access to the sport for all.

The regatta is not just about racing –it’s also about giving back. The club will again raise funds and awareness for the club’s nominated charity, Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA), a cause close to its heart.

Last year’s efforts raised over £400 through donated rowing kit sales, and the participation of a rower living with dementia served as a powerful reminder of sport’s inclusive and uplifting power.

From organising race schedules to providing hot food and hosting sponsors, the event relies on the tireless efforts of club members, volunteers, umpires and generous sponsors.

This year’s regatta is being coordinated by Bonita Birkett, whose dedication continues the high standards set in previous years—who will be joined by long-time regatta chairman Eric Froggatt, after his absence last year whilst sailing around the world.
