Kestrel Gymnastics Club, based in Chepstow, has been given a £500 boost from funding by Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation to purchase essential safety landing mats and foam blocks. Kestrel Gymnastics Club was founded in 1997, offering a positive environment for local young people with classes for all levels of expertise, from beginners to existing gymnasts. The vibrant and successful club is a not-for-profit organisation run largely by volunteers, offering recreational gymnastics sessions and training to a competitive level in tumbling and artistic gymnastics. Fully qualified coaches also offer a number of classes that develop children towards British Gymnastic Awards. Shirley Lazere-Bennett, head coach of Kestrel Gymnastics Club, said: "We were thrilled to receive the donation from the foundation. "With over 160 members at the moment it's extremely important that health and safety requirements are maintained, and the mats have also allowed a much larger area of the floor to be used by the gymnasts. "Having the correct mats and foam blocks is vital for the training of all gymnasts and we were in desperate need prior to the donation so we're extremely grateful for the helping hand." Since 2000, Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation has contributed over £140,000 to more than 230 local organisations and charities. In the last financial year alone, the foundation has provided support to 29 local organisations. Penny Reeves, chairman of Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, said: "The foundation is delighted to be able to support Kestrel Gymnastics Club. "They offer a positive environment for local young people, providing opportunities to gain regular exercise, build social networks, improve discipline and instil a sense of pride and belonging. "We are extremely pleased to have provided funding for the essential safety equipment, and we look forward to watching many of the young gymnastics develop their skills and hopefully even go on to represent the UK at national and international events."
