`DESPITE another high score from skipper Ross Lewis, Sudbrook CC lost at Abergavenny Firsts, thanks to good bowling and an unbeaten 124 by opener Andrew Jones.
Lewis hit 95 from 99 deliveries but lost partners regularly as Tamoor Zafar (3-35 from nine overs) and James Hrastelj (2-47-10) went to work.
Lewis was supported by Micky Martin (56) and Lewis Morgan (47), but apart from James Hussey's 38 runs, the other batsmen fell for single-figure scores and the visitors' innings ended on 262-9 from 50 overs.
Ben Supple took the top bowling honours with 2-36 in 5.3 overs as Jones and Andy Clarke (81) helped the home side to 265 with two-and-a-half overs to spare.
Lewis admitted the result was a disappointment after recent results.
"We batted really well and it was good to see a return to form for Micky Martin, and useful contributions from Lewis Morgan and James Hussey," he said.
"We thought it was a good score but knew we would need early wickets if we were to win.
"We were under par with the ball early on and they got off a flyer. We were unable to put any pressure on their batsmen and in truth they eased to victory.
"All credit to their Andrew Jones and Andy Clarke who put on 160 for the fourth wicket.
"Our fielding was extremely disappointing and is something we need to work on before Friday when we visit Usk in the Macey Cup, entertain them at home in the league on Saturday and visit Newport in the Welsh Cup on Sunday.
"The boys are looking forward to putting things right after this defeat and we will welcome back Rob Thorn and Matthew Kinchin to the squad."
Meanwhile, at Mill Lane, Sudbrook Seconds' opening bowler Rob Simmonds (1-27) produced a great first delivery to dismiss Abergavenny opener Morgan Bevans.
Seven of the remaining batsmen made starts but wickets tumbled regularly with good catches held by Nathan Thomas and Martin Norton, while wicketkeeper Bradley Bates helped with a stumping and a catch – Abergavenny finishing on 192-9 from 45 overs.
Sudbrook Seconds' skipper Jamie Watkins took 3-32 and Norton 2-19 – including a well-taken caught and bowled – to mop up the tail.
In reply, Bates (22) and Greg Shaw (35) gave Sudbrook a solid start but an impressive 78 by Andrew Kinchin saw them take the initiative and, after Watkins contributed 17, Matthew Burton (21 not out) and Scott O'Leary (7 not out) saw them home at 193-4 with seven overs to spare.
