Monmouth's first team got the new netball season underway in the South East Wales Premier division on Monday 8th September. They faced last season's league runners up Newport A, knowing it would be a tough fixture and that they would have to come out strongly. The first quarter began with high intensity, with both teams converting goals off every centre. Newport maintained fast and accurate passing into their strong shooting unit, with defence player Vanessa Ball narrowly missing out on contesting for interceptions against the Newport Goal Shooter, who had a distinct height advantage. A few unforced errors from Monmouth allowed Newport to take advantage of an early lead at the end of the first quarter. Newport continued to play fluently throughout the second quarter, extending their lead by 10 goals. In the third quarter the links between the Monmouth centre court attack of Emma King and Kali-Jade Cross connected well, and Monmouth were able to feed the shooters, Nina Booker and Lisa Small, who both moved well and pulled off some impressive shots from range. Monmouth's new addition to the defensive unit, Becky Hoggins, came on at half-time and played a part in a series of successful turn overs after intercepting the rebounds, allowing Monmouth to get back within eight goals by the end of the third quarter. Monmouth went into the final quarter of the game with positivity, but they were unable to keep the strong Newport shooter at bay, who came back on court after being taken off the previous quarter. Any unforced errors made by Monmouth were quickly converted to goal, and combined with a strong, consistent attack, Newport were able to almost double Monmouth's final score, 48-26. Monmouth picked up a point for reaching over half of Newport's score.
