A NUMBER of Monmouth rowers have been selected to take part in the 2018 Home International Regatta in Cork this Saturday (21st July).

Katie Kearsey, Josephine Harrison, Mia Boycott and Arwen Van Der Horst from Monmouth Comprehensive School Boat Club and Sophia Frankel, Stephanie Du Toit and Abigail Potter from Monmouth School for Girls have been picked for the Junior Womens team.

Tom Brice, Leon Handley and Sam Morgan from Monmouth Comprehensive School Boat Club and Antony Wright, Iwan Hadfield, Georg Pfennig, Ben Emes, Robbie Prosser-Wrench and Jack Tottem from Monmouth School Rowing Club have been selected for the Junior Mens team.

The junior squads consist of 32 athletes, all between the age of 16 and 18.

“We’re optimistic,” said Julia Cowton, juniors girls coordinator and talent development coach for Welsh Rowing. “We’ve got a young squad, but we’ve got a couple of years to build on that.

“The main thing is they [the rowers] will go out there and do their best."

Leaving from Cardiff Airport at 7am tomorrow (Friday 20th July), the rowers will be presented with their Welsh kit before the regatta begins on Saturday morning.

•A fundraising campaign has been launched by rower Sam Morgan to raise funds for kit, accommodation, food and training camp which will cost in excess of £400. For more information, or to donate to the appeal, go to www.gofundme.com/funding-for-welsh-squad-hir
