THE Black Rock lave net fishermen’s 2017 season is at the midway point and despite good numbers of salmon sighted the catch has only risen to three fish.
The first was taken by Paul Watkins and this wins him the Bob Leonard Cup which will be presented at the fishery open day on 26th August.
A large seal has been sighted on the lave net fishing grounds and the fishermen are sure he is having more luck than them.
On calm non fishing tides the fishermen have made two trips to the mid channel Denny Island west of the lave net fishing grounds. On the second they landed and an ancient cannon ball was found and returned to the net house for display.
The fishery remains very popular with a six page feature in the glossy Landscape magazine July/August edition and filming for the ITV program Coast and Country. The programme will be shown on Friday 4th August at 8pm and will feature Black Rock’s chairman Bob at 86 years of age and the club’s youngest member Matt Fox.
Visitors are always welcome to the fishery. Further details and fishing dates can be found on www.blackrocklavenets.co.uk and or the club’s Facebook page.
