TWO teams with just one defeat each clashed at the Llanarth Cricket Ground with Llanarth having won all four previous meetings between the sides.

Llanarth skipper Dennis Heath won the toss and decided to insert Welsh Asians Cricket Club 3rd XI, backing his bowlers in sunny but blustery conditions.

Initially the decision paid off as Welsh Asians came out swinging but didn't connect as David Lomax (2-18) grabbed a couple of early breakthroughs to reduce the visitors to 9-2 from 7 overs.

Despite losing two partners Tariq Faqir (70) played a succession of fine strokes and, in conjunction with his captain, Tariq Awan, a fine counter-attack was launched that, for a while, Llanarth had no answer to as the pair added 108 in 19 overs.

It took a reckless stroke from Faqir to end the partnership as, with a defensive leg side field set, he opted for a switch hit against Chris Powell (6-39) and was LBW.

Awan followed immediately and welsh Asians needed to build again with new batsmen.

In truth the remainder of the batting line-up were unsure what to do against the spin of Powell. Most opted to hit out, which occasionally resulted in a boundary, but eventually ended in their downfall. Even when Powell spilled a return catch Baxter was on hand to pick up the grassed opportunity and run out a dithering batsman.

Eian Johnson returned to pick up a wicket via a catch by Tom Vaughan, who was making his first start of the season after an ankle break. It was Powell though who ran through the rest of the batting order to pick up another deserved bag of wickets and bowl Welsh Asians out for 171.

Although satisfied that the score was well within reach Llanarth were slightly disappointed with their performance in the field with some sloppy errors coming under pressure during the Welsh Asians counter-attack.

After tea Lomax (74 not out) and Baxter (51) opened up for the Trees, looking to start positively in the run chase.

This they did with some excellent running between the wicket, interspersed with occasional boundary strikes. Indeed they hardly looked in any danger until Lomax called his partner for a run then changed his mind when Baxter was close enough to shake his hand. Thankfully the fielder made a mess of the chance and the "Yes, yes, no, oh go on then" call resulted in an easy single.

Drinks were taken with Llanarth in total control at 95-0 and both batsmen completed solid half-centuries shortly afterwards.

The Trees were coasting to victory so it was a surprise when Baxter was well beaten by a seaming delivery that flicked his thumb on the way through to the keeper, and he left with the score at 124.

If Welsh Asians thought they could engineer a collapse, Christian Dewfield (27) had other ideas, striking a couple of boundaries as he and Lomax continued a ruthless march to the target.

To continue the anticlimax the Welsh Asians' bowler then delivered a huge wide for the winning run as Llanarth reached 172-2 and victory by eight wickets to move to 2nd in the league table.
