WELSH Rowing presented the Home International Regatta General Management Committee with a new junior men’s trophy in Cork, with the trophy’s inaugural winners decided at last weekend’s regatta in Inniscara.

The trophy has been named the John Hartland trophy for Junior Men, recognising the contribution of John to rowing in Wales, and to Welsh Rowing.

John Hartland was rowing coach at Monmouth School from 1964 to 1994, created the rowing club at Monmouth School for Girls when he retired and was instrumental in founding the organisation that is now Welsh Rowing. He created the Welsh Rowing Council as a standalone organisation to promote rowing in Wales. He was chairman of the Welsh Rowing Council for decades and was key when it was formally separated from the Amateur Rowing Association to become the Welsh Amateur Rowing Association.

He rowed himself in the Welsh VIII in 1968 and was involved in every Home International Regatta for decades into the new millennium. He was team manager for many Welsh teams and was always referred to as Mr Welsh Rowing, advocating for rowing in Wales and succeeding in achieving the investment to give Welsh Rowing paid coaches for the first time. As a school coach, junior rowing was his passion.
