Penallt Tennis Club's adult mixed and singles tournaments were held last last weekend. The players could not have wished for more perfect playing conditions, warm but not hot and just a light breeze. Fortunately for those involved, the men's singles didn't produce any three-set marathon matches, although sadly two players had to retire due to injury. The final was between Dave Guppy and Paul Hazlewood. The tennis was of an excellent quality and the match was much enjoyed by the spectators. Dave won 6-2, 7-5. The plate final was between Adam Clarke and Adrian Harman-Bishop, with Adam winning. Arianna Guppy won the ladies singles playing against Liz Clarke so we have two singles champions from the same family. The mixed competition was full of closely contested three set matches. In the quarter-finals, Chris and Rosie Adams had a three set match against Mark and Lynda Thornycroft. There were two very lengthy semi-final matches. Liz and Adam Clarke had a very close match against Chris and Rosie, eventually winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. On the neighbouring court, Ginny Higgins and Chesney Britton were battling against Dave and Arianna Guppy, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. The final was just as lengthy and the noble supporters were watching until 8pm. Adam and Liz Clarke won in the end, the score was 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Adam used his height to put away a huge number of overheads at the net. In the mixed plate competition, Bob and Michele Hall had a very close three-set match against Steph Howell and Alex Jones, winning 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Michele and Bob went on to win the plate, beating Sue and Martin Dean in the final.
