David Higgins together with local co-driver Craig Drew took their fourth consecutive Rally America National Rally Championship with victory on the New England Forest Rally in the Team Subaru USA Impreza but it wasn't without last minute drama. The duo knew a top two place would seal yet another title. Thirteen special stages lay ahead and the opening loop of tests were very rough, so they decided on a conservative approach to avoid punctures. Teammate Travis Pastrana held a slender lead over the first two tests, but then Higgins upped his game on the stage three to emerge with an eight second lead. From then on the lead increased with every stage, although Pastrana did suffer a puncture. Going into Stage 10 the duo held a comfortable one minute 34 second lead when the drama started to unfolded. Higgins struck a rock causing major suspension damage and seeing their comfortable lead start ebbing away. At the end of the stage, Higgins was repairing the suspension damage when a small fire flared due to the heat from the car and he got a full face of fire extinguisher spray. As they left service for the final three tests, the lead was now just 31 seconds, but despite his discomfort Higgins and Drew pushed on to not only to win the rally from Pastrana but wrap up their fourth title in a row. "Rallying is never over until its over as we've seen today," said Higgins. "But I am delighted to have won the event and our fourth title." This weekend sees a host of local crews tackle the Stephens & George Harry Flatters Historic Rally over the notorious Epynt Ranges. Joining the combined entry of 115 crews will be Simon Tysoe and Cliffy Simmons in the Jondel Race Engines Escort RS1600, and Simon Pickering and Colin Jenkins in their pinto engined Escort RS1600. Joining them to battle for Welsh Historic points will be the Brecon View Plumbing Escort Twin Cam of Jason Gardner and Ade Williams. Also racing will be Eric Davis and Russell Joseph in the Dennis Motorsport Mini GT. Pictured are David and Craig flying to victory. Picture courtesy of Subaru USA.
