MONMOUTH Cricket Club's girls' section played their first-ever matches on an historic afternoon at Newport Fugitives. Monmouth launched a girls' section last summer with the support of Cricket Wales but last Sunday's event was their debut. Monmouth's girls put in three excellent performances in the soft-ball Lady Taverners National Under-11 club outdoor county competition. The Monmouth girls were a credit to the club and were outstanding despite losing narrowly to both Lisvane and tournament winners Radyr; and suffering a defeat against Newport Cricket Club. Anna Vines, Shannon Maguire and Catrin Watkins all took it in turns to captain the side on a very hot but enjoyable day. The team finished the day with their best performance, against Radyr. Emily Bowley, Peaches Hale, Olivia Jones, Naomi Roberts, Hattie Brennan and Vena Rose also played very well on their debuts for Monmouth's new girls' team. Coach Ian Morgan thanked all the parents who supported the team, including Andy Bowley and James Maguire for their help on the day. He also thanked the club's girls' coach, Tracy Hodgson, who could not make the day; and Cricket Wales trio Steve Watkins, Lee and Alex Herring for their help and support in launching a girls' section at Monmouth.
