Gwent County League Division Three - Brynmawr 2 Caldicot Castle 0
CALDICOT Castle manager Dave Adamson pledged that his players would keep fighting until it is mathematically impossible to escape relegation after they lost 2-0 at Brynmawr.
“We played really well but didn’t get our rewards,” he said later.
“The pitch was flooded and, in my opinion, the game shouldn’t have been played.
“Despite that, we played better football and Brynmawr scored their first goal against the run of play.
“Then we had a legitimate goal ruled out when Paul Harris’ volley which was about a foot over the line, wasn’t given by the local ref.
“A mistake by our keeper gave them their second goal, but all in all I was really pleased with the battle we showed today.
“We’ll give it our all and aim to take maximum points in our last three games and see where that will leave us.”
While Castle’s position is precarious, Severn Tunnel may have slipped closer to the trapdoor after losing 4-2 at home to Coed Eva Athletic at the weekend.
The defeat leaves Tunnel in 11th place but with conjecture over the number of teams likely to be relegated from Division 3 at the end of season, they may spend a nervous couple of weeks now they have completed their season’s fixtures.
They will be safe if – following Sebastopol’s withdrawal – only two teams go, but there are three teams from the feeder league who have the necessary ground requirements and a fourth club is expected to complete ground improvements by the county league’s deadline.
This could mean the bottom four could be relegated and Tunnel can do nothing about it if Rogerstone or Ponthir who occupy 13th and 12th position respectively, gain three points from their six remaining games.
After seeing goals by Chris Taylor and Jordan Thomas overtaken by Athletic, Tunnel boss Marcus Jenkins was taking a philosophical view.
“What will be, will be,” he said. “We will just have to pick ourselves up and go again – it’s as simple as that.
“We didn’t deserve to take anything out of the game because we just didn’t turn up.
“It was probably the worst performance I have seen us produce and that’s a shame because we have some really good players in our squad.
“All we can do now is wait and see what happens.”
