East Gwent Senior League Underwood 10 Tintern Abbey 1
ONLY one match was played this weekend in the East Gwent League, with Underwood Athletic beating Tintern Abbey 10-1 in Division One.
Underwood SC booked the 3G pitch at Caldicot for their match and took full advantage to move into second place behind Mathern Reserves A with a 10-1 victory.
Underwood train on the 3G surface and looked far more “at home” in the first 30 minutes as Abbey’s players adjusted to the surface.
By then, Underwood were totally in control and well ahead thanks to goals by Dave Jackson, Sean Johnson, Tom Turner and Josh Downing.
Jackson, Johnson and Downing went on to complete their hat-tricks in the second half with Geraint Reynolds scoring Tintern’s consolation from the penalty spot.
Underwood boss Craig Johnson said he was pleased with the double-figure scoreline.
“Over the last couple of weeks we’ve had consistency in the first team and this has shown with us scoring 25 goals in two games and only conceding once,” he said.
“I’ve been especially impressed with our defence with Ashley Edinborough and Justin Bidgood bringing much-needed experience to the team.
“Our aim now is to keep the pressure on Mathern and wait for them to slip up. This result also gives us great confidence going into the Amateur Cup next week at Oak FC which will be a tough game.”
