Centenary Cup Final - Underwood SC B 0 Mathern B 2

MATHERN FC’s second Reserves team won the Centenary Cup at Caldicot Town’s ground last Friday – and are gearing up for the Fishwick Cup final this Friday (15th April).

The Division Two title hopefuls, who have a number of talented young players in the squad, were grateful to two experienced men to provide the goals that defeated Underwood SC B.

Strikes by Stuart Mackie and Harry Ward gave Jeff Whitehouse’s men their first piece of silverware.

“Any game against any Underwood team is tough and I was concerned when Jimmy Burchill told me before the game that he wasn’t 100 per cent fit,” Whitehouse said.

“I had quality all across the bench and I needed it as Harry Ward pulled up injured soon after scoring our second.

“I thought it was important we scored first and Jimmy’s skill on the wing was superb. “His pass for the first goal was great and there aren’t many players better than Stu Mackie, who you would want to finish it.

“Once we scored I always thought we would go on to win it. Everyone did their job and our keeper Jason Johnstone pulled off two fantastic point-blank saves to keep us in it.

“We should have scored more but we are creating so many chances. There may be changes for the next final because we have a strong squad and the boys are making it very difficult for me each week.

“The cups are a bonus because the league title is more important. It’s a great season but there’s still much to do.”
