SUDBROOK CC remained in pole position in Gwent County League Division Two despite them not playing at the weekend.

Four points ahead of second-placed Wattsville, Sudbrook are nevertheless more concerned about third and fourth-placed Ynysddu and Abertillery who are both still involved in the Gwent FA Amateur Cup quarter-finals.

Ynysddu are eight points behind the Mill Lane club but have three games in hand while Abertillery are also eight points adrift but have played four games less than Daryl Cann’s men who will again be without a match this weekend.

Also in Division Two, Mathern missed the chance to improve their place in the table when they lost 4-2 at Machen with Luke Farley scoring both goals.

Mathern boss Lee Baker insisted his men had dominated possession for long periods but he conceded that defence frailties had proved costly yet again.

“We are working hard at trying to prevent us making these mistakes,” he said later.

“We played some of the best football we’ve played all season but we are shipping too many goals through silly mistakes.

“The team spirit is there for all to see so we will stick together and keep going.”

Meanwhile, in Division Three, Severn Tunnel’s home game with Cefn Fforest was postponed and Underwood Athletic lost 8-0 at home to Coed Eva Athletic.
