East Gwent Senior League Roundup

AS Mathern Reserves continued to lead Division One, closest rivals Severn Tunnel A kept up their bid for the title and promotion to the Gwent County League with a 4-2 home win against Tintern Abbey,

Tom Atkins, Jack Harrison, Ethan Addis and an own goal gave Tunnel the points with Geraint Reynolds and another own goal replying for Tintern,

Meanwhile, in Division Two, Severn Tunnel C secured the shock result of the day with a 4-3 victory over Chepstow Town for whom Nick Owen (2) and Steve Pattison scored.

Tunnel C’s manager Ron Atkins said he was proud of his team and their goalkeeper, his son Sam, who saved a penalty and produced another fine save to deny Town an equaliser,

“We had a strengthened side due to our B team’s match being called off,” he said,

“It was a free-flowing game and a pleasure to watch.

“Ashley Lewis and Chris Owram took us to 2-1 but Chepstow equalised before our third team stalwarts Dan Griffiths and Lee Champion made it 4-2.

“Again, Chepstow cut our lead and would have equalised for a second time but for Sam who saved a penalty and made a Gordon Banks-type save near the end,

“It was all about our defenders putting bodies on the line especially when we went down to 10 men due to injury and the league should be proud of both teams.

“Chepstow were upset to be beaten two years in a row by my band of soldiers but they know how to accept it with grace.”

That slip allowed Underwood SC B to take over at the top following their 6-1 defeat of Sudbrook CC while Mathern Reserves B are third after a 3-1 win at Portskewett and Sudbrook thanks to Kyle Gettings’ 15th Division Two goal of this season, Elliot Powell’s first for the club and Tom Marmont.
