STRIKER Dan Tyler netted five goals as Mathern Reserves won 9-1 at local rivals Chepstow Athletic.

But the happiest Mathern player was Michael Gettings who scored his first goal ever!

Gettings, 27, followed his brothers Keiron and Kyle when they signed for Mathern at the start of the season and his enthusiasm earned him the call when Mathern boss Lee Baker was left a player short.

“Our first team needed Wayne Duffield on the bench for the Amateur Cup match and I lost another player through injury so I brought Michael in,” Baker said.

“He did well and his goal was a bonus – he hasn’t stopped thanking me for picking him!”

Michael, who has only been playing football for a couple of seasons, was thrilled to have contributed to one of Mathern’s biggest wins of the season.

“It’s a great club and everyone’s very friendly – it was great to score,” Michael said.

Mathern’s other scorers were Tom Watson with two and a Harry Lewis thunderbolt.

“I’ve never seen him strike the ball better,” added Baker.

The victory maintained the six-point lead Mathern hold over Severn Tunnel A, 6-0 winners at home to Severn Bridge although Tunnel have a game in hand and have yet to visit the leaders.

In other results, Undy Athletic won 3-1 at Caldicot Town and Tintern Abbey won 5-1 at Caldicot Castle.
