MATHERN FC blunted league leaders RTB Ebbw Vale’s title challenge with a 2-0 home victory last weekend.

Unbeaten since 8th September, Ebbw Vale have been scoring goals for fun so to keep a clean sheet and take three points from a team leading the table by 10 points was some achievement.

Mathern boss Colin Jeffery was obviously pleased with the way his team had performed.

“We lost 4-1 at their place in September and I knew they would be tough opponents,” he said later.

“We kept constant pressure on their defence and midfield and they just had no room to play their style of game.

“We ground out a really good, and deserved, win by keeping our discipline and working hard for each other.”

Ieuan Diyaolu put Mathern ahead pouncing on a loose ball after the visitors’ keeper could only parry a shot.

Although a slender lead, Mathern keeper Jacob Tyson was rarely tested and the defence stood firm.

Matty Board applied the finishing touch minutes from the end after good work on Mathern’s left flank by sub Billy Jeffery earned a corner.

Board curled the ball in at the far post leaving Ebbw Vale’s keeper clutching thin air.

Mathern face another tough test this weekend when second-placed Ynysddu are the visitors.
