AFTER last weekend’s white-out, the focus falls on four cup semi-finals this Saturday.
The one-off matches will be played at Undy Athletic, who host Caldicot Castle, and Rockfield Rovers who entertain Underwood Athletic with the winners booking their place in the Gill Cup final due to be played on 6th April,
In addition, Saturday also sees Division Two teams in the Fishwick Cup semi-finals when Portskewett and Sudbrook welcome Caldicot Town and Mathern entertain Severn Tunnel, equally intent on reaching the first of the finals on Friday, 30th March.
The ties give the top scorers in both divisions, a great chance of taking the Golden Boot awards this season.
In Division One, Caldicot Castle’s Richard Lund has 22 goals in all competitions so far and with team-mates Joe O’Brien and Craig McCluskey (18 each) chasing him, an extra game at the end of this campaign could be the difference between winning and losing the coveted award.
Will Morgan (Chepstow Athletic) tops the Division Two rankings with 33 to his name – 14 ahead of second-placed Wayne Duffield (Mathern).
As there will be no replays or second leg matches, the cup-ties all kick off at 1.45pm.
In the league programme, only one Division match is scheduled as Sudbrook CC take on Tintern Abbey at Mill Lane while in Division Two Thornwell Red and White B welcome near-neighbours Chepstow Athletic,
Meanwhile, in the Gwent County League Division Two, third-placed Sudbrook CC can put more pressure on the team above them – Wattsville – if they can win at second-from-bottom FC Tredegar.
Six points behind Wattsville, Sudbrook have an inferior goal difference but should improve on that deficit if their strikers can equal the form they showed against Pill a week ago.
Mathern are home to Clydach Wasps and although safe, the club will be keen to end the season with a strong run-in sees them visit Pentwynmawr Athletic on 24th March and finish the season at home to the same team a week later.
