The Kingfishers returned to Abertillery Excelsiors for the second time this season after a 3-1 win in the Welsh Cup previously.

The match started well for the Kingfishers with the away team stringing together some nice phases of play and breaking through the home teams high press. It only took until the 12th minute before Jay Taneri, making his first start for the club, found himself just inside the box on the angle before calmly driving a left foot finish into the back of the net to make it 1-0. The Kingfishers continued to dominate as chances went begging, the best coming from young striker Sam Williams running on to a through ball only to be thwarted by the Excelsiors keeper who saved with his legs.Second half it was very much as you were, with Monmouth dominating possession and dealing with the home teams long balls fairly comfortably, goalkeeper Travis Wood having on one long range strike to save all game. In the 59th minute.Taneri received the ball on the edge of the area before slamming home his and the teams second of the game, this came after a well worked team move. It wasnt long before Monmouth got a third, only six minutes later, Robbie Atkinson split the Excelsiors defence with a great run before rounding the keeper. Then five minutes later Rob Whitlock, also making his first start for the Kingfishers, nonchalantly picked his spot and made it 4-0 to Monmouth. This was a really strong display after injuries and illness had decimated the squad numbers.Manager Scott Russell added; "Really good solid performance, I felt we controlled the game from the start and for the lads that came in today gave a good account for themselves. ’’Not an easy place to come and play but it’s great to see Jay and Rob Whitlock score on their first starts of the season. ’’Young Sam Williams will kick himself as he could and maybe should have scored three but fair play to him for being in the right place to get the shots away, he worked his socks off for us in the nine. ’’Its important to pick up points as quickly as we can due to the amount of games we have in hand on everyone else, but that’s two wins on the bounce and I look forward to our next game at home."
