Gwent County League Division Two

Mathern FC 6 Cromwell 0

MATHERN FC’s unbeaten run extended to eight games thanks to a 6-0 win at Cromwell, a victory notable for a fine penalty save by Jacob Tyson and an opportunist “screamer” from Lewis Cutajar.

Before the game, Mathern boss Colin Jeffery admitted he would have been happy to take a point at third placed Cromwell who had previously lost only once.

“We took the game to Cromwell and went ahead through Elliott Greening with a good strike,” Jeffery said.

Mark Organ made it 2-0 and Mathern were cruising with Cromwell only offering a couple of shots from long range in reply.

After the break Cromwell pressed for 15 minutes but Mathern soaked up the pressure and when Organ and Lewis Cutajar scored the third and fourth, Cromwell crumbled.

“Lewis’s goal was special,” Jeffery added.

“He spotted the keeper off his line and hit a sweet shot from 40 yards which sailed over his head into the net.”

Dan Drake and Matty Board complete the scoring before Jacob Tyson stepped in with his own moment.

Cromwell were awarded a penalty but Mathern’s young keeper was determined to preserve the clean sheet.

“It was the final moments and I thought as we had dominated throughout, their penalty taker might not be as confident as he would have been if they were 6-0 up,” Tyson said,

“My dive made sure I covered the right side and the middle of the goal. The penalty was just straight down the middle so it wasn’t too difficult to block it with my legs to clear it,” he added.

Manager Jeffery was pleased with his side’s performance and the good result. “This was an unrelenting performance against a good Cromwell side,” he said.

“Our new signings have settled and the team are playing for each other with confidence and enthusiasm.

“To come away with a win and performance of the season was absolutely superb! We are playing with belief and passion.

“There is a fantastic team and club spirit here at the moment with all local boys enjoying their football.”
