East Gwent Senior League

THIS weekend’s main events are the Fishwick Cup semi finals featuring four East Gwent Senior League Division Two teams.

The league has decided to make the semi-finals more interesting by staging semi-finals of all cup competitions on the 3G pitch at Caldicot Leisure Centre although finals will again take place on Caldicot Town’s pitch.

In the first semi-final, at 1pm, Chepstow Town take on Mathern Reserves B and the second, at 3pm, sees Severn Tunnel B take on Sudbrook CC.

In last weekend’s league matches, Chepstow Town won 3-1 at Severn Tunnel B thanks to goals from Nick Nesbit, Matt Owen and Town keeper Alex Pinchard who took advantage of the strong wind to score with a clearance which bounced over his opposite number’s head and across the line!

In Division One, Thornwell Red and White took advantage of their B team being without a game by giving some of them a chance to play Chepstow Athletic, winning 5-1.

“We played well despite having quite a few first team players missing,” said Red and White’s manager Terry Woodward.

“We looked a lot better in the final third and took the lead through Neil Brown’s header then doubled the lead with a great volley from Kenny Vidler.

“We let in a soft goal just before half time although it was a good finish and we started the second half quickly and pressure from Tom Chappell caused a defender to loop a clearance over his own keeper.

“We dominated the second half and more goals came from Liam Parker, from a cross by yours truly, and Neil Brown scored his second to complete the scoring.

“It was wet and windy but we played some really good football. I’ll be looking for more players for next season.”

Other results in Division One were Caldicot Castle 2 Undy Athletic 4 and Underwood 3 Caldicot Town 0.

Meanwhile in Division Two, Portskewett and Sudbrook beat Caldicot Castle 4-3.
