East Gwent League Division One - Caldicot Castle 14 Caldicot Town 1

LEADERS Caldicot Castle did their goal difference a power of good with a 14-1 thrashing of Caldicot Town at the weekend.

Castle player-manager Joe O’Brien rested five players from last week’s 2-0 win over Thornwell Red and White A, a match in which he admitted he was never likely to score.

That was not the case against Town though, with O’Brien finding the net three times in the rout.

“Richard Withey started the scoring before Sean Johnson bagged his first and second goals for the club since joining in the summer,” O’Brien said.

“We gave Town a chance which they took but we continued to dominate the half.

“Town had a player sent off too and slowly gave up with their depleted squad.

“Rick Woodland got in on the action, then there was an own goal before  Joe Shaw-Jones scored.”

Joe O’Brien made it 7-1 before the break but there was to be no let-up in the second half.

“We made substitutions early in the second half and continued to boost our goal difference,” the Castle boss added.

O’Brien bagged two more, Zac Nibblett scored his first for the club and goals by Steve Edwards, Craig McCluskey (2) and Jake Withey completed the scoring.

“Jake’s goal was the best of the lot, smashing the ball into the top corner from 18 yards out.

“It was nice to see all the boys grabbing goals but it was a shame Town couldn’t bring a bigger squad as I’m sure they would have given us more of a game if they’d had a full squad to pick from.

“We take the goal difference and look forward to next Saturday when we visit Mathern.”
