East Gwent Senior League - Division Two
HIGH-scoring Sudbrook CC thrashed Mathern B 14-2 on the 3G pitch at Caldicot Leisure Centre to consolidate third place behind Underwood B and Chepstow Town.
Mathern B boss Keith Tipper admitted there wasn’t a great deal to say after the comprehensive defeat.
“We couldn’t handle their runners like Richard Lund and it didn’t help that we lost Ryan Palmer early on, injured in a bad tackle which went unpunished,” he said.
“Chris Huggett and Matty Bajjada scored for us. It’s a blow but we go again next week.”
Chepstow Athletic followed their cup victory over Underwood B last week with a 1-1 draw at Portskewett and Sudbrook.
“The equaliser was a penalty in the final five minutes.
“We were absolutely gutted with the result,” admitted Athletic’s manager Jake Parkinson.
“It was one of those days when the ball just wouldn’t go in the net.
“We controlled the game for long periods and made plenty of chances but their keeper played a blinder and fair play to them, they battled for 90 minutes and defended manfully.
“At 1-0 up, there was always a chance of them getting an equaliser, and we switched off from a throw-in and that led to the penalty in the last five minutes.
“We now need to pick ourselves up for the match against Mathern next week.”
Meanwhile, Underwood B reacted to their manager’s call to put the defeat by Athletic behind them.
“I wanted my players to bounce back and get back to winning ways,” Johnson said after watching his men beat visitors Severn Tunnel 9-1.
“With their positions in the team in jeopardy, the players showed great determination to prove why they should be in the team and gave me the reaction I wanted.
“With Chepstow Town losing, we are in a good position to win the league,” he added.
“We’ve just got to keep doing what we do and I’m sure we will be at the top of the league at the end of the season.
“I’m just glad the defeat happened in the cup and although I am a bit annoyed that we can’t win everything in East Gwent as a club, it’s always a hard ask to go undefeated all season.
“Sometimes you need that one loss to keep you on your toes.”
Underwood’s scorers were Callum Ford (2) Jahmal Johnson (2) Kieron Watkins, Ashley Edinborough, Josh Edinborough, Shaun Ryall and Jermaine Allen.
Chepstow Town lost 3-2 at Caldicot Castle B with Canavan and Roberts scoring for Town.
