THE going was good, good to firm in places for the Friday 30th May evening meeting that preceded the UB40 concert.
The first race, a five furlong maiden for two-year-olds, went to Sahreej (evens fav), from Charles Hills' stable.
Bounced out of the stalls by William Twiston-Davies, he set the pace and after repelling Just Glamorous in the penultimate furlong came home three lengths ahead, with the Queen's runner Husbandry taking third place.
Malcolm Saunders has Lucky Clover (8/1) in good form this year. She disputed the lead for most of the next race, a 5f handicap, until taking a narrow lead two out and running on well for Cathy Gannon. She hung on by a neck and the same from the strong-finishing Pull The Pin and Diamond Vine.
Another front-runner had success in the 7f maiden – Cape Cay (7/4 fav).
Pushed along with increasing urgency two out, she kept on well and at the post was in command by two and a half lengths from Doctor Bong.
Sarangoo, helped by getting a flier at the start of the 7f handicap, made most of the running and only lost out in the last couple of strides to the grandstand finish of Mime Dance (3/1). They won by a nose.
Martin Dwyer restrained Avocadeau (3/1) into second place in the one mile 2f handicap until taking the lead two out. Despite wandering around under pressure, the gelding kept on well enough to hold off the fast-finishing favourite, Ballyglasheen.
Dwyer soon doubled up with May Be Some Time (4/1). Brought alongside the leader three out, he had to be ridden out all the way to the line to take the 1m4f handicap by a length and a half from Arantes.
The finale, also a mile and a half, went to Nellies Quest, the well backed 15/8 fav. Sent into a clear lead at halfway by Jenny Powell, the field closed in three out, but she found more and stayed on very well to see off Brown Pete by a length and a quarter.
