Chepstow Cricket Club suffered heavy league and cup defeats at the hands of Panteg last weekend.
In the Thomas Carroll Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League Division One last Saturday (8th June), Panteg posted an impressive 294-7 from their 50 overs and ran out winners by 185 runs.
Lloyd Smith starred with the bat for the visitors, scoring 123 from 137 balls, hitting 13 fours along the way.
He was supported by Ian Bird's 52 off 49 balls, Akhtar Balouch (25) and Chris White (23 not out).
David Teague finished with figures of 2-50, Rhodri Fawsitt took 2-73 and there were also wickets for Huw Rogers, Mitchell Harris and Malith Madurasinghe.
In reply, Nick Folland (15) and Teague (14) made a solid start but when the first wicket fell for 27, it sparked a collapse which saw Chepstow staring into the abyss on 44-5.
Tuhin Gavand (34 off 45 balls) and Sam Jackson (24 off 42) put together a 48-run partnership to restore some pride but the home side were bowled out for just 109.
Adam Harrison was the pick of the Panteg bowlers, taking 3-27. Christopher Mee took a wicket and there were two-apiece for Chris White, Jack Mayers and Ian Bird.
The following day, Chepstow travelled to Panteg to face the same opponents in the Welsh Cricket Cup.
The home side won the toss and batted, this time scoring even more rapidly to post 311-4 from their 40 overs.
Opener Balouch smashed 108 off 113 balls including 11 fours and three sixes.
Smith hit 77 off 65 balls including 10 boundaries and Bird made 65 not out from just 47 balls – hitting nine fours and a six.
Harris was Chepstow's best bowler with figures of 2-39. Josh Tregaskes was the only other visiting bowler to take a wicket while Scott Bailey engineered the run out of Balouch.
Chepstow's reply was a similar story to the day before, with the first wicket leading to a collapse. They recovered from 34-4 and 54-5 to reach a respectable total but never looked like matching the home side.
Gareth Ansell (25 off 17 balls) provided some firepower at the top of the order and Jamie Rayner (34 off 72 balls) gave the innings some stability.
Harris, with 28 off 54 balls, and Gavand, with 16 off 33, remained unbeaten to guide Chepstow to 139-7 but could not prevent a 172-run defeat.
Mee, Mayers and Carwyn James took two wickets each for Panteg and White also took a wicket.
