THE Forest of Dean Cycle Centre is gearing up for an exciting month of mountain biking this September with the launch of the Dean Dirt Rush, a celebration of local talent, thrilling races and community events across the region’s famous trails.
Inspired by the Forest’s coal mining heritage, the event name reflects a new kind of ‘Black Gold’ the rich variety of mountain bike trails attracting riders from far and wide.
The Wild Boar Chase is one of the exciting events happening next month
The Forest is fast becoming a mountain biking hotspot, thanks in part to Ellwood’s Charlie Hatton winning the World Downhill title in 2023 and recent national success for young riders Frankie Windebank and Cooper Cassells.
Both teenagers took Youth gold at the National Downhill Championships in Fort William, boosting the area’s reputation for producing top MTB talent.
“From Little Fodders to national champs, it shows how special our community is,” said Gareth Sheppard, Managing Director of Pedalabikeaway at Cannop Valley.
“Dean Dirt Rush celebrates that journey, where grassroots meets champions and everyone leaves trail-ready. We’re proud to be part of such a thriving scene and can’t wait to welcome riders of all ages.”
The month of events begins on September 6-7 with the Hope Tech Women’s Enduro, a popular event designed to encourage more women into mountain biking and racing.
From September 12- 14, the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre hosts FOD Fest, Pedalabikeaway’s flagship event.
Limited entry spots offer a thrilling enduro race, bike demos from top brands such as Whyte, Pivot and Santa Cruz, film nights, skills competitions and plenty of food from the award-winning Pedalabikeaway café.
The month concludes on September 21 with the Wild Boar Chase, a scenic off-road challenge spanning 22 to 43 miles through forest tracks and drovers’ roads.
Open to all fitness levels, the ride is fully supported and raises funds for local trails through the Forest of Dean Lions Club.
