South East Wales Cricket League Division One - Chepstow First XI (140-2) beat Usk First XI (137 all out) by eight wickets.

MITCHELL Harris’ unbeaten 75 saw Chepstow maintain their leadership of the Division One table at Mathern Road on Saturday.

Heavy rain overnight meant a delayed start and a 40-overs match and after winning the toss, stand-in skipper Tyler Morgan-Huggett elected to field.

The home side struck early, Luke Watson having Iain Clayton caught behind by Jonathan Huws without troubling the scorer before Morgan-Huggett held the best catch of the day to send Owen Watkins (13) back to the pavilion and give Paul Swingwood his sole success at a cost of just 19 runs.

The skipper back-pedalled and flung himself full length to hold onto a firmly struck shot that was heading for the boundary.

Huws then stumped the dangerous Henry Lewis (29) as the batsman advanced at a Mitchell Harris delivery before Tyler’s twin brother, Tudor, enjoyed three wickets, bowling George Lewis (18), Neil Perrett (15) and trapping Matt Hancock leg before wicket.

Dave Teague claimed the best bowling figures with three wickets for a paltry 12 runs in just 23 deliveries.

Tom Robinson was caught by Huws for 22 and Richard Rees (19) holed out to Carwyn James a few yards inside the boundary.

Sandwiched in between, Malith Madurasinghe picked up a caught-and-bowled wicket to remove Joe Peacock and Ben Jones capped a fine all-round performance by the home side, by holding a catch offered by James Aston.

In reply, Chepstow lost opener Teague in the second over when James Aston’s first delivery broke the stumps but that brought Harris to the crease and he and James (42) built a match-winning partnership.

When James departed, Tyler Morgan-Huggett accompanied Harris to reach the target in the 23rd over.
