WITH ‘wild swimming’ and other outdoor challenges growing in popularity, Monmouth Triathlon Club is inviting everyone who enjoys a swim or a jog to consider giving the Monmouth Challenge Aquathlon, held in and along the banks of the Wye, a try on Sunday, 24th July.
The event is hosted by Monmouth School Sports Club and offers three race alternatives. The full challenge involves a two kilometre swim in the River Wye, (500 metres upstream and then 1.5 kilometres downstream) followed by a 12.5 kilometre multi-terrain running route within the beautiful wooded lower Wye Valley just above Monmouth. They are also offering a one kilometre swim option (all downstream) and for those who prefer to stay out of the water, there’s the 12.5 kilometre challenge run.
The run is the same for all events and is on footpaths along the river bank - across fields and through woods. Competitors will get to enjoy a really scenic stretch of the Wye, crossing over the border into Herefordshire en route as well as crossing the river at Biblin’s bridge.
The Challenge Aquathlon is Welsh Triathlon accredited, sponsored by local business Freeman Homes and with support from Jewel Balti and Ribena Suntori provides a professionally organised sporting event, popular with Monmouthshire people as well as athletes from further afield.
Chairman of Monmouth Tri Club Phil Tilley said: “We’re really happy that the event attracts local people who enjoy running or swimming and want to give themselves a new focus or challenge as well as more seasoned athletes from around the region. Last year, we were able to support two great local charities by donating part of our proceeds – Gwent Wildlife Trust and Monmouth Homestart - and we’re hoping to support other good local causes again this year.”
Race Director Richard Newhouse said: “Last year, we had over 100 competitors, who said they really enjoyed the river swim and off road, scenic run route. We hope people will challenge themselves again this year, perhaps ‘graduating’ up the distances and introducing friends to the event.”
