Chepstow ventured to Kington last Saturday (20th April) for their final match of the season.

Chepstow needed a win to avoid relegation while Kington needed a win to get promoted.

Chepstow's bare 11 with their right winger Hilary Baker donning the keeper's kit in Knox's absence pushed back and drove into Kington's defence.

Kington intercepted and using slick skill and set plays, they gained ground fast. Chepstow stepped up to regain possession as Chepstow looked to be playing a defensive game.

Kington soon found a gap in the D to move the scoreboard to 1-0.

Putting their conceded goal down to fatigue, Chepstow stepped up and had two narrowly-missed attempts at goal of their own. Kington soon replied with another ball in the backboard despite some great work in defense and saves from Baker.

At 2-0 down, Chepstow regrouped at half-time, focussing their strategy on holding formation and hunger for the game.

Kington weren't expecting Chepstow to hit back hard as Chepstow broke again and again through Kington's slow defence.

It wasn't long before a swift free hit was taken by Chepstow, picked up by Kate McKoy in the pocket and delivered to Eburne on the left wing.

Hannah Moore and Eburne worked towards goal as Eburne crossed a strike at goal, right wing Hannah Williams put away the deflection to the surprise of Kington.

Chepstow's energy tripled as efforts from all players gained momentum. Kington were putting pressure on Claire Clarke, Jean Williams and Mary Baker in defence, who denied Kington with conviction.

Moore intercepted a cross from Kington and worked play around the midfield in a fast counterattack. Eburne took a run on the wing taking the ball around Kington's defence, who were on the back foot.

Suddenly half of Kington were facing Eburne as she struck the ball into the D for Williams to smash into the backboard.

It was 2-2 and Chepstow were silencing the vast home crowd with their triumphant comeback. Kington were frantically trying to keep possession and gain ground as Chepstow stood firm.

Kington broke into the D and flicked the ball at Baker in goal, who saved the strike with her hand.

Chepstow drove the ball back up the pitch but Kington;s resolve intercepted Chepstow and they were back on the attack. With five minutes left Kington converted their third goal and Chepstow weren't able to reply.

Kington's home crowd congratulated Chepstow on their efforts and couldn't believe Chepstow were going down after such a performance on the pitch.

Chepstow Ladies should look upon this as an opportunity to rebuild the squad next season following on from the tough half of the season they faced with losing players to pregnancies, university and globe trotting.
