MADAM,

What fun AM Nick Ramsey is having running a campaign to let the public have “Monmouthshire” on our post.

I hope he is not taken too seriously. Our county has many other serious issues to address. If the consultations and resulting decisions are unfair, we will see a very unhappy public.

Having worked for Monmouth County Council for 25 years, I would be interested to know Nick’s evidence of debt. The Labour governance then, meant that all heads of departments were gathered once a month to account for the budget.

Older people will remember the early seventies, when we had two councils, Monmouth District Council (Conservative) and Monmouthshire County Council (Labour). In 1974, local government reorganisation caused the two councils to merge into a unitary authority but, still Labour controlled.

The name changed to Gwent. Presently, we can enjoy the use of either Monmouthshire or Gwent. Our postman still delivers both. We were not consulted on previous occasions for name changing, so why now? Could an Assembly election be drawing near?
