THE Queen's Birthday Honours List included three people from Monmouthshire, recognised for their work in the fields of sport, agriculture and policing.

Brian Rhys Davies, from Caldicot, has been awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his contribution as Chef de Mission for Team Wales at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, for services to sport in Wales.

In his role as Chef de Mission, Brian (pictured) oversaw an excellent performance by Team Wales at the Glasgow games, with 36 medals won by a team of 243 athletes over 17 sports.

Helen Phillips, chair of Commonwealth Games Wales said: "We are delighted with the news of Brian's honour, and he is a very worthy recipient of this tremendously prestigious award.

"He was instrumental in uniting a team of athletes, their coaches and a professional support team which resulted in securing our team's outstanding performance at Glasgow. We look forward to continuing to work with Brian in his role as Director of Elite Performance of Sport Wales."

Other recipients from the county include Usk farmer David Morgan DL, of Trostrey Court, who was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to agriculture and for voluntary service to the agricultural community in Monmouthshire.

This year, David is president of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society and Monmouthshire is the feature county.

It was early May, in the run up to the general election, when he received the letter confirming the award. "Nancy opens the post and it said on the top 'from the Prime Minister, David Cameron' so we initially dismissed it as an electioneering pamphlet," said David. "I looked at it after and realised it was something different!"

He began the building company "Morgans of Usk" in the workshop at Trostrey Court in 1965 and there are few farms in the county that do not bear the sign proclaiming the shed was erected by the company.

The business moved to an industrial unit in Usk in 1973 and are preparing to move again as they have just bought a site at New Inn, although they may keep some capacity in Usk.

"We are all industrial now," said David "and have been the last five years, that side has grown and grown."

They recently held an open farm day at Trostrey Court to raise money for the local churches.

Caroline Peters of Penallt, Chief Superintendent, Area Commander for Avon and Somerset Constabulary, was also mentioned in the honours list.

She has been awarded an MBE for her services to policing.
