THE Rotary Clubs’ Walk The Wye event, held on Sunday 14th May attracted almost 400 walkers from as far afield as Bath, Birmingham and Bridgend.

The valley scenery was at its springtime best, in glorious sunshine, with bluebells and wild garlic in flower, and fresh green leaves on the trees.

Some walkers entered into the fun spirit of the day and turned out in a variety of pink outfits. Michele Whiting from Raglan, dressed as a fairy, won the award, as the most outrageously dressed walker, for the second consecutive year.

The annual walk event was organised by the Rotary Clubs of Monmouth, Chepstow and Ross-on-Wye to raise sponsorship money specifically for breast cancer research.

Roger Finn, President of Monmouth Rotary Club said: “We were very pleased with the number of walkers who joined the seven different walks between Chepstow, Monmouth and Lower Lydbrook. “We received almost £1,000 in sponsorship money on the day, with many more walkers still collecting donations from their sponsors. It looks like being a very successful event.

“I ask everybody to give generously, to support both the walkers who made such a tremendous effort, and the breast cancer research team at Velindre.

Walk co-ordinator, Rotarian Norman Williams, said: “It was great to see so many walkers enjoying the day, and the various walks that we’d organised. The unique formula of taking walkers up or down the valley by bus, and letting them stroll back to Monmouth in their own time, along the banks of the Wye, was much appreciated.”

The Rotary Clubs thanked all those who helped make the day such a success. In particular, Monmouth Show Ground committee for providing an excellent venue for the event, H and H Motors for providing the bus transport, Eagle Plant for the site facilities, Abbey Mill for the catering, M&M ices, and St John’s Ambulance and, all the walkers.
