MORE than 15,000 people attended the 2016 National Eisteddfod yesterday (30th July), with thousands more expected today and throughout the rest of the week.
Frank Olding, chairman of the executive committee behind the Eisteddfod, announced the figure earlier today, adding that it has been "really heartening" to see the level of support for the event so far.
"It seems to have been a long time coming, but the Eisteddfod has landed", he said.
"We have been planning for 18 months and it has at times seemed a bit abstract but we are most definitely right in the middle of it now.
"I must admit I’ve had a few sleepless nights but it is really heartening to see local people show their support.
"We had 15,000 in the field yesterday; the two concerts were amazing and the standard of entertainment has been fantastic.
"I very much hope that everyone will continue to enjoy what is going on".
The event, which continues throughout the week, will offer a range of activities, talks and concerts, with Frank himself to host a range of talks later in the week about the history and archaeology of Monmouthshire.
Frank also praised the support of Monmouthshire and residents of Abergavenny who he said had offered a "very warm welcome".
"It has been a fantastic experience so far", he said.
